Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon Review

Strong Woman Do Bong-Soon (2017)

Putting off this drama for later in my To-Watch Drama List was a big mistake and I hope you don’t do the same. This beautiful and funny story will take you on an airy lighthearted romance roller coaster with unbelievable circumstances, obviously. On a side note, I have never fallen in love with such a cute and silly main character before so props to Hyung-Sik’s performance.

This is a drama about Do Bong Soon (Park Bo Young), a girl with superhuman like strength, trying to live a normal quiet life and land her normal-like dream job while trying to be a normal girl/employee without using her super strength. This, on the other hand, seems rather impossible when she becomes An Min Hyuk (Park Hyung Sik)’s personal bodyguard. Will Bong Soon manage to live a normal life? You will have to watch the drama to find out.

The story in this drama is fairly simple, but what makes it unique is her superhuman strength. The writer, Baek Mi Kyeong, did a nice job explaining the story behind Bong Soon’s strength. This ability has a quite unique fault or rather there is a unique way in which Bong Soo could lose her strength. This fault actually sets up her character from the get go and it tells the audience what kind of character Bong Soon is. The driving conflict of this story provides an element of mystery and thrilled amongst the couple. I also liked how the conflict gave way for a love triangle to flourish and die between Min Hyuk, Bong Soon and her friend form high school and detective In Kook Doo (Ji Soo).

The interaction between these three (Min Hyuk, Bong Soon and Kook Doo) was adorable and I would like to hold Hyung Sik responsible for that. His acting in this drama was so … cute. I had seen other dramas with him but not as a lead actor, which is one of the primary reasons why I kept putting off the drama. Ji Soo's acting was on point too, hence these guy’s bromance was perfect. The antagonist, Jan Mi Kwan, who played the part of the kidnapper also did a great job at being a smart and weird psychopath. One more actor who hilariously surprised me in this drama was Kim Won Hae, who played both gangster Gwang Bok and manager Dol Byung. That Dol Byung character gave me a shock at first because I had previously seen Won Hae act in Black, and his first character here and there were both the typical serious guy, and Manager Dol Byung was such a diva; props to him.

I can’t forget to point out the special effects, because a drama about a girl with super strength requires super effects. And I must say they were pretty nice. From her carrying and dragging people to the sound effects and the punches, everything seemed real with a cartoonish touch to it. Does that make sense? Also, aesthetically the visuals were colorful and pleasing to the eyes just like the drama promotional poster. Everything felt right into place, which help the drama stay in its genre even with the dark side the conflict inflicted.

In the end the drama maintained a good pace all throughout, so I was surprised at the ending. [SPOILER: the fact the writer and director had the time to give it a full look into the future, with them being parents and all was nice. But I wouldn’t have mind if they left it with them being together in the end.] I guess the writer thought the ending would help the drama keep its sense of comedy and romance till the end. But you could be the judge of the ending by watching the drama. Would you agree with me?

My rating for this drama is: ♥♥♥
